The first phase of highway and infrastructure work on the £70million Turbine Business Park has been completed.

Located within the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area for Ultra-Low-Carbon Vehicles, which is being delivered by regional development agency One North East, the scheme is set to deliver 4,000 jobs to Sunderland.

Barmston Directors, Jason Stowe and Bob Culliford were joined on site by Councillor Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, the council’s Chief Executive Dave Smith, One North East chairman Margaret Fay and deputy chief executive Malcolm Page.

The new access road and infrastructure works have been delivered by Barmston Developments Ltd, a joint venture between Wilton Developments and Clugston Estates and the scheme is now set to deliver a 715,000 sq ft business park with office and industrial units, a hotel, car showroom, ancillary retail and a hotel.

Jason Stowe, managing director of Wilton Developments, comments: “Further significant investment of £3 million in Turbine Business Parks new roads and infrastructure during such a difficult economic climate not only proves our confidence in Sunderland and Turbine Business Park, but it also ensures that sites are immediately available for occupiers in a market where other sites may have stalled and may not come forward for development.

“We’ve already received a large amount of interest on the site and we expect this interest to grow now that this first stage of work is complete and people can see progress on site.

Bob Culliford, managing director of Clugston Estates, adds: “We’ve worked closely with Sunderland City Council to create a vibrant masterplan  and we’re pleased that they, and One North East who are also involved, have joined us today as we move a step closer to delivering Turbine Business Park.”

As part of the development, there will also be highway improvements to the A19/A1231 junction which will benefit the wider regeneration of Sunderland and the surrounding area.

The 55 acre scheme is strategically located between Sunderland and Washington on land fronting the A1231 adjacent to the junction with the A19.
