Press Release
NO TIME WASTED IN RECYCLING PROJECT
Clugston Construction and its joint venture partner EarthTech have completed the first phase of a £27M waste management project, handing over the new Smallmead Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) to client re3 ten weeks ahead of schedule
Phase 1 of the build has seen the construction of high specification, cladded steel structure to house the HWRC together with associated roadways and paved walkways to enable public access and use of the facility.
Phase 2 is now underway to cater for deliveries from kerbside collection trucks and construction of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where refuse will be segregated, compressed and baled. Continuation of the building will include an office block for council use and a visitor’s centre where the public can watch the MRF in operation.
re3 is a joint partnership between the Waste Recycling Group and Reading, Bracknell Forest and Wokingham Borough Councils. Spokesman Oliver Burt said: “We are delighted with the timely handover from which all parties will benefit. The centre has been constructed to such a high standard that it is a model for waste recycling in our industry.”
‘Theory of Constraints’ planning techniques enabled EarthTech Clugston to complete early, allowing the councils to bring forward their segregated waste distribution programme. In addition, the joint venture team has so far achieved more than 130,000 man-hours with no loss time accidents.
John Everitt, project manager, said: “The safe and early handover of Phase 1 is a reflection of the high level of commitment and effort shown by the joint venture team and the excellent relationship with our client. We are sure this will continue throughout the remaining contract.”
After completing work at Smallmead, EarthTech Clugston will commence work at a similar project at Longshot in Bracknell.
