£35M FACTORY SCHEME FAST TRACKED

Clugston has successfully completed the new £35m plasterboard manufacturing and distribution facility for Lafarge at Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire. Working around the process installers, Clugston Construction’s attention to planning has enabled the project to be fast tracked.

The 25,000m² manufacturing facility was constructed adjacent to the Ferrybridge ‘C’ power station from where synthetic gypsum ,the bi-product of the power station’s flue gas desulphurisation plant, will be readily available. In a sustainable process, the synthetic gypsum is delivered by conveyor belt direct from the power station to the manufacturing line, and is then mixed with natural gypsum to form the core of the plasterboard which is cut and packaged on line.

Working on the site of the old Ferrybridge ‘B’ power station, Clugston Construction’s team had to undertake extensive groundworks to remove existing concrete foundations and other obstructions, much of which was broken out, crushed and reused for the piling working platform and as bulk fill.

A number of foundation techniques were used on the project to overcome existing ground conditions, including pre-cast driven piles, flight augered piles, screw piling and band drainage. A steel frame solution was used for all the major structures giving speed, flexibility and a reduction in the number and size of piles required.
