CLUGSTON GROUP APPOINT NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Stephen Martin has now taken over at the Scunthorpe based group upon the retirement of Roy Butcher who has held the position for 16 years.

Stephen, aged 41, was previously chief executive at the West Midlands contractor, Barhale Construction, and brings with him a wide range of experience having held commercial and general management roles with Westinghouse, Kvaerner Metals and Amey Rail.

Stephen has an MBA from London Business School, is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Commenting on the appointment, group chairman John Clugston, whose father founded the business 70 years ago, said: "We have effected a well managed transition of the role of group chief executive and a smooth handover. We are delighted to have attracted someone of Stephen's experience and calibre to take the Group forward. We are most grateful for the way Roy Butcher has carefully and successfully steered the company over many years. Following a period of reorganisation and consolidation under his leadership, the business is now well positioned for further progress.”

Stephen Martin said: "Clugston Group is in a sound state with good quality contracts and order books and the business is at an interesting stage. I look forward to building on firm foundations."

Roy Butcher, who steps down from the board at the end of March, said: "I decided that after 16 years I had taken the business to the point where it is now a good time for someone who can take a longer term view to take over the helm. The group balance sheet is strong, we have reorganised the company and created a stronger focus on its core businesses."

Roy Butcher is not retiring from business. He continues his role as non-executive chairman of Barrett Steel and will pursue other business interests.

Stephen Martin is returning to Scunthorpe where he spent his early career with a local electronics company, and where he also met his wife Lisa, who is originally from Doncaster.
