Location: Sheffield
Current Value: £24.1m
Duration: 151 weeks
Consultants: CNIM
 Earth Tech Engineering Ltd

In order to offer our customer the best possible service Clugston entered into a Limited Liability Partnership with the turnkey plant providers CNIM. Clugston have primary responsibility for the design and construction of civil, structural, building and building services elements of the Energy Recovery Facility project.

The £68 million project will provide an aesthetically pleasing plant that will convert 255,000 tonnes per year of municipal domestic waste into 20MW of electricity or 29 MW of heat for a district heating scheme.

Works to be carried out on this restricted site include the construction of a 10m high piled retaining wall to allow vehicular access, workshops and maintenance areas below the reception hall, an 11m deep waste bunker, bunker and crane hall, furnace hoppers, boiler hall, turbine hall, ash shed, silo farm, air cooled condenser, spray absorber, stack base, office accommodation, weigh bridges, roads and accesses.

This partnership, with a value to Clugston of £16 million, will ensure a seamless transition from concept through to construction and avoid the potential pitfall due to design development and information transfer that has been common to this type of project.

Clugston built the new facility alongside the old one which will be demolished in late 2006. The new ERF's capacity to handle 225,000 tonnes of waste per year is 66% more than the present plant.

This design and build project for civil structural engineering, building and building services achieved the Institution of Civil Engineers Yorkshire and Humber Region Award for excellence in concept, design and execution of Civils Works in 2006.
