Materials Recycling Facility

Huddersfield

Client: Lurgi UK Ltd
Location: Huddersfield
Current Value: £3.1m
Duration: 35 weeks
Consultants: Eastwood and Partners

Construction of a 4000 sq.m. facility capable of recycling 10 tonnes/hr. The facility also provides the reception hall for the 155,000 tonnes/annum Waste to Energy Plant.

The facility was designed to accommodate the client's requirement to occupy as large an area of the site's unusual footprint as possible. This requirement was further enhanced by the use of only five structural columns are sited within the building floor area thus allowing maximum space utilisation.

Works included drainage, conveyor pits, insitu concrete 4m high pushing walls, fire protection and detection, air handling and mechanical and electrical works and external works. The adjoining Waste to Energy Plant dictated that ventilation air change intake louvres and extract fans where carefully sited to ensure the required performance. The system also had the secondary function of supplying primary air to the waste furnace.

The external doors and walls were clad in sympathy with the Waste to Energy Plant and the nearby McAlpine Stadium as both structures are within a regeneration area. The project was completed by extensive landscaping.

A design and build project.
