This project involved the design and build of a number of steel framed buildings designed to house a new plasterboard manufacturing line, associated process equipment, laboratories and offices as well as warehousing facilities and infrastructure interfaces with both rail and road transport links. Buildings include the 210,000 ft² production building and the 12,000 ft² gypsum store (slab piling avoided by the use of band drains and overburden loading).
The site is located on the former Ferrybridge B coal fired Power Station, that was in use from the early 1960ʼs until its demolition in the early 1990ʼs. As such, at handover, Clugston Construction were given a brownfield site with a network of both known and unknown live and redundant services, areas of low level contamination (including asbestos) from previous activities and a list of some 30 Planning Constraints imposed by Wakefield Borough Metropolitan District Council due to the concerns of the potential impact that the development and operation of the facilities would have on the local community and surrounding wildlife.
The project progressed with Clugston, working in close partnership with the Environmental Consultants at Scott Wilson appointed by Lafarge, tackling the Planning Conditions. These ranged from conducting archaeological surveys prior to commencing excavation to conducting further ground investigation surveys to establish the extent of low-level hydrocarbon contamination.
Close co-operation between Clugston and our customer ensured that customer appointed and managed process and production equipment contractors were integrated seamlessly into the overall construction programme. Following successful completion of this complex and challenging project we are now discussing the construction of further plants of this type.
