Ineos Chlor

New Chlorine Plant

Client:Ineos Chlor
Location:Runcorn
Current Value:£13.5 million
Duration:113 weeks
Consultants:Fluor

This plant produces chlorine by the membrane system. It is the sole source of chlorine in the UK, uses ore power than the city of Liverpool and is a major investment in the Runcorn plant. Clugstonʼs works were carried out in two phases. Phase one was the enabling works including the crushing and reuse of demolished structures as backfill, deep concrete drainage, large diameter GRP pipework laid in large open cut trenches and breaking of piling.

Phase two has included all civil engineering works to the multi storey structures of the two process buildings, 120m long cell room, twelve transformer bays, chlorine compression and liquifaction plant, HCl synthesis plant, H2SO4 storage area, toxic air and cleaning plant, hypo production plant, emergency absorption plant, cooling tower area and evaporators.

The civil engineering works have included drainage, pilecaps, large and deep foundations for tanks and vessels, water retaining structures to the cooling towers, high quality floor slabs at ground and upper floor levels, chemical resistant resin flooring, large scale diamond drilling and hundreds of concrete plinths and penetrations Works were undertaken on both the brownfield cleared site and within the existing plant complex requiring compliance within the type of rigorous permit regime with which we have extensive experience through projects carried out in the petrochemical and other process industries.

Our excellent working relationship with Fluor allowed partnership working delivering the flexibility and quick response to the emerging detail design and the smooth transition through following engineering trades to complete the works.
