This £330 million 730MW plant, the largest of its type in Europe, will utilise a combination of natural and waste gas generated by ConocoPhillips' Humber Oil Refinery and the adjacent Total Petrofina Elf refinery. The exhaust gases from the gas turbines are used to generate steam to drive turbines to return steam for use in refinery processes and to generate electricity.
The power generated by this extremely efficient plant will not only supply the refineries needs and export the surplus to the national grid but will also improve environmental performance (the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road when compared to other power stations) by reducing carbon emissions.
Clugston have played a vital role on the 50 hectare site which commenced by the carrying out of the enabling and piling works including a large settlement and attenuation lagoon. The control and administration building, the nerve centre of the plant, was designed, constructed and handed over by Clugston for equipment installation and commissioning. The civil engineering infrastructure works element has been extended to include all civil and building finishing works including extensive concrete slabbing, pipe and cable ducting and other ancillary works required for process plant installation. Clugston's flexibility, teamworking approach and quick response in a difficult working environment was of significant benefit to the customer in bringing the plant on line to their timescale.
