This partnering project procured through a 2 Stage tender process under NEC3 Option D conditions allows the combination of the existing Lowfields and Oaklands Schools onto one site at the Oaklands school which is to be renamed York High School. The school will have the capacity to accommodate 1000 learners. City of York Council have let the project under a partnering process following a two stage tender procurement. The team includes the City of York as designers, White Young Green for Project Management and Clugston for construction. In order to allow the existing Oakland School to be extended and refurbished learners have been decanted to large temporary volumetric modular accommodation, provided under the contract, at the Lowfield School site. Following completion of the new High School Lowfield School will be demolished and the site sold for housing.

The High School will have a sports speciality and an existing sports facility on the Oakland site will remain open throughout the build process. The sports facility will also be extended by Clugston under a separate £5m partnering project. This will include a swimming pool, including a six lane 25m pool, learner pool, hydrotherapy pool, gym, crèche, cafeteria, wet changing facilities and reception area.

The new build element of the school includes a 30 x 40m two storey high atrium with a mezzanine level housing the library, learning resource, IT resource, humanities, graphics, food technology, maths, 2 science laboratories, 2 science preparation rooms, a science preparation store, café and break out space. Fit out and refurbishment of 4 existing science laboratories has also been carried out, each laboratory is fitted with fume cupboards.
Adjoining the atrium will be a two storey teaching and dining block that will be constructed from volumetric modular units. This will provide ten language rooms, learning support, Key Stage rooms, behaviour and counselling, staff accommodation, meeting room and toilet facilities. A roof lantern and light wells ensure that natural daylight is transmitted throughout the block.

The existing school accommodation will be given a thorough overhaul to provide a welcoming modern feel and external finishes to existing and new accommodation will include cedar boarding, render, clay block rainscreen, curtain walling and brickwork
