The design and construction of this plant was carried out on an extremely restricted site bounded by a railway, a canal and industrial premises. A key aspect of the visually stimulating project was to design to parameters and constraints that ensured sympathy and cohesion with the design of the nearby McAlpine Stadium as both structures are within an area of future regeneration.

The 155,000 tonnes/annum Waste to Energy Plant and 10 tonne/hr Materials Recycling Facility project included the extensive, careful partial demolition of the late 1960's existing reinforced concrete municipal incinerator building. Detailed consideration of the temporary state of the remaining structure, careful planning and the use of specialised equipment, including explosives, was fundamental to safely achieving our customer's requirements.

To ensure that the required capacity was achieved the existing 30m high structure was then extended by use of a structural steel frame, pre cast concrete roof elements, insulated cladding and rainscreen systems. The 8m deep waste bunker was also extended by the use of a large diameter contiguous piled wall faced with a reinforced concrete inner skin to increase capacity by 50%.

The design and detailing of cladding systems and their support was required to all areas, including the 40m high boiler hall. The building envelope utilises a variety of cladding systems such as imported American transluscent acoustic panels, curtain walling, various steel profiles and rainscreens.

Close co-ordination and careful detailing of the complex and demanding interfaces between systems was a particular feature of this project ensuring the achievement of the required crisp, linear visual effect.

Elements of the plant include; bunker and crane hall, tipping hall, turbine hall, boiler hall, ash shed air cooled condenser, spray absorber, flue gas filters, silo farm, electrical areas and workshops, weighbridges, office accommodation and gatehouse.
