Linear Accelerator Building

The Linear Accelerator Building at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield was completed under a partnering agreement with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust using the NEC Option C conditions. The four storey building, on a restricted corner site bounded by the public highway and occupied busy hospital buildings, sits above a basement which contains the two new linear accelerators used in cancer treatment. High quality, dense aggregate concrete works were carried out in the basement in order to contain any harmful radiation energy emitted. The project was executed in a very sensitive environment and was continually used by cancer patients and staff of the hospital. Our attention to detail and thorough planning of work activities was therefore paramount to the success of the scheme as not to disturb the very important nature of the work being carried out in the existing building.

Clugston was originally appointed to carry out the enabling works for the project to the value of £50k. During the period these works were carried out, Clugston, with the Design Team, worked up a scheme for the main contract which resulted in a GMP. This involved working extremely closely with the Trust and the end users to fully understand and respond to their requirements.

The project was completed in May 2005 to the complete satisfaction of the customer. The success of the relationships established during the project has resulted in the negotiation of further projects for the extensive refurbishment of a day care centre, refurbishment of the existing oncology unit and three temporary car parks with a value approaching £1m. We are working closely with the customer to plan and resource works in accordance with the available budget.
